In class on Tuesday we discussed piracy. We were asked questions such as our opinions on piracy and how it effects artists and writers. Piracy is defined as stealing basically. For example when you illegally download a song or album or mixtape, you are stealing from the original artist. My opinion is that piracy is wrong and it can harm the music industry.
I'm sure you have heard of a website called Pirate Bay; this website is a great exapmle of piracy. The four men behind this website were all found guilty in court and were sentenced to one year in jail. they also had to pay 3.6 million dollars in damages to media based companies such as Warner Brothers, Columbia, Twentieth Century Fox, Sony BMG and EMI. Pirate Bay shares music, movies and other files and has over 3.5 million users. Even though they were found guilty they did not shut down the pirate bay website. I think that they should have. Another case you have probably heard about is Limewire vs RIAA. Limewire is a program that shares files such as movies, music and pictures. The court found that 93% of Limewire's file shares were copyright infrigement. Limewire was permanently shut down. A judge found Limewire and its creator Mark Gordon liable. That article is here. I think both of these cases are fair and I believe that piracy is wrong.
